The last time there was a crash of the world economy, much of the world turned to fascist solutions, including Hitler in Germany, Mussolini in Italy, Franco in Spain, Hirohito in Japan. Even in the United States, a military coup was aborted by the changing attitude of General Smedley Butler This is described on the Internet by Wikipedia as the Business Plot.
The fascist governments of the 1930's were not only preparing for war, but they also intensified greatly the culture of war through authoritarian rule, secrecy and propaganda, use of enemy images, including scapegoating of ethnic minorities, exploitation of slave labor, etc.
The strengthening of fascism after 1929 was supported by major sections of the capitalist class, the largest industrialists and financiers. In the case of Germany, this was described in a doctoral dissertation by David Abraham which was published as a book in 1981, The Collapse of the Weimar Republic. It turns out that this topic is taboo and after finding minor faults in his scholarship (later corrected in a second edition of the book), leading American historians literally ran him out of the profession, ensuring that he could not be hired by any leading university. Similarly, there is a taboo against full discussion of the so-called "business plot" in the United States that is mentioned above; among the major industrialists and financiers involved were the DuPont family (chemical industry), U.S. Steel, General Motors, Standard Oil, Chase National Bank, and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
How can we avoid the fascist solution?
