Social movements: Global and regional networks (Coordinator Comment)
Many of the social movements promoting aspects of the culture of peace use the Internet for global coordination and dissemination of their work.
However, there is still not very much coordination among the various organizations and movements, so that the global movement for a culture of peace remains more potential than fact. The various social movements often do not consider themselves as related to the culture of peace. Instead, they often compete with each other for limited funds and membership.
Occasionally, many of them get together at the World Social Forum which was begun in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2001. However, the success of the forum is at the same time a weakness, for it has avoided establishing a permanent coordinating body, believing that the time is not yet ripe for such a move.
