fear

courage

Main Topic: Coordinator Comments

Those who believe that war is based in human nature point to the fact that the propaganda that prepares people to go to war uses fear tactics to make them afraid of the enemy, and that fear is one of the few universal characteristics of men who are going into battle.

On the other hand, those who believe that war is not based in human nature may consider that fear is a result rather than a cause of the culture of war.

Courage is often mentioned as one of the good features of warriors, but it has also been argued that courage is essential to those working for peace. One of the best known arguments in this regard is that of the American philosopher, William James, who proposed that sports should be used as an alternative to military training in order to develop courage and promote peace.
